GCSE Examination Updates (Summer 2022)

 Dear Parents and Carers,

I am writing to inform you of the updates on the 2022 GCSE examinations. The government have announced that your child will sit formal examinations this summer.

The Department of Education have stated that pupils will sit their GCSE exams with adaptations to recognise the disruption to their education. These adaptations include:

  • A choice of topics or content on which pupils will be assessed in GCSE English literature, history and geography.
  • Providing advance information on the focus of exams to support pupils’ revision in subjects where there is not a choice of topics.
  • Giving pupils formulae sheets in GCSE maths and revised equation sheets in GCSE combined science and physics.
  • Changing requirements for practical science work and practical art and design assessments to ensure fairness.

Further details on the adaptations to GCSE qualifications are included overleaf.

Contingency Arrangements

Although it is the Government’s firm intention for exams to go ahead, contingency plans have also been announced if further disruption to education occurs. In the unlikely event that exams are not able to go ahead as planned, Teacher Assessed Grades (TAGs) will be used.

What does this mean for my child?

Dean Trust Ardwick will provide the education and support to ensure your child can achieve the best possible outcomes in their summer GCSE examinations.

Due to the contingency arrangements outlined above, your child should consider that their performance any mock examinations might be used as evidence to inform the awarding of Teacher Assessed Grades.

November Mock Examinations

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that your child will be sitting GCSE mock examinations at Dean Trust Ardwick from the week beginning the 22nd November. To ensure your child can perform to their potential in these examinations please support them by:

  • You have a copy of your child’s Mock Exam timetable
  • Your child attends all booster and revision sessions after half term
  • Your child is revising and completing all homework set by their teachers

The above timetables will be sent to parents and guardians in November.

I would like to thank you in anticipation of your support.

Yours sincerely

Mr D Fuller

Assistant Headteacher

Q. What is being done for vocational and technical qualifications in 2022?

A. All vocational exam boards have approved assessment adaptations for many subjects, both at unit and qualification level.  These will help to allow more time for teachers to deliver any knowledge and skills missed during the lockdown periods and ensure pupils are suitably equipped to produce high quality coursework and fully prepared for external exams this year.

Where pupils were not able to sit external exam units last academic year, or where coursework units couldn’t be completed, teachers have awarded unit level ‘teacher-assessed grades.  These are based on evidence pupils have already produced, including coursework, trust assessments and mock exams. These grades are currently in the process of being quality assured by each exam board and will be confirmed in January 2022.

There may be opportunities to re-sit any external exam units that pupils missed last year, which will be highlighted by subject teachers, where appropriate.

Q. When will students get their results?

A. GCSE results day will be held on 25th August 2022.
